About Us

Who We Are

Boise Tenants United is an organization of tenants, for tenants. We believe in the need for Tenant Power; for tenants to organize as a collective to bargain with our landlords. We agree with the national Tenant Union Federation about the need to decommodify housing, guarantee housing as as public good, and to establish tenants as a powerful political and economic class.

Points of Unity

Our Analysis

We define tenants as people who need housing but don't control it.

We believe this lack of control is rooted in the basic conflict of interests between tenants and landlords. Tenants need housing to live, landlords own and control housing to make profits through rent.

We believe this lack of power is the fundamental cause of tenants' greatest struggles.

Our Aims

We aim to organize tenants into associations across the Treasure Valley to build tenants into a powerful political and economic class.

We aim to build a strong city-wide tenants' union in Boise which is democratic, transparent, and egalitarian.

We aim to move towards the decommodification of housing, including the guarantee of secure, affordable, and quality housing to all.

Our Strategy

Because tenants' struggles result from a lack of power, we are committed to building Tenant Power as the only true solution to these struggles.

We are committed to building Tenant Power by all appropriate tactics, including organizing tenants associations, direct action, lobbying for pro-tenant reforms, and more.

We intend to organize tenants as a class regardless of ideology, race, sex, orientation, or any other social difference.
